Do You Need a Panel Upgrade for a 48A EV Charger? How to Tell
The most common hesitation about a 48A charger isn't the charger — it's the electrical panel behind it. "Will my panel handle it?" is the right question to ask, and the answer is more encouraging than most buyers expect. Here's how the math works, what an electrician actually checks, and what your options are if capacity is tight.
Why 48 amps needs a 60 amp circuit
EV charging is a continuous load — it runs for hours at full draw. Canadian and US electrical codes require circuits serving continuous loads to be sized at 125% of the load, so a charger delivering 48A must sit on a dedicated 60A breaker (48 × 1.25 = 60). The circuit requirement is fixed; the real question is whether your panel and service have 60A of headroom to give.
Service size matters more than breaker slots
A panel that looks full of breakers isn't the same as a service that's out of capacity, and an empty-looking panel doesn't guarantee room. What matters is your service size — the total amperage coming into the house — versus your calculated demand. Most Canadian homes built or upgraded in recent decades have 200A service, and for those, adding a 60A EV circuit is routine in the large majority of cases. Homes with 100A service can often still accommodate one, but it depends on what else the house runs: electric baseboard heat, an electric range, a dryer, air conditioning, or a hot tub all eat into the same budget. Gas-heated homes on 100A service frequently have more room than their owners assume.
What the load calculation actually is
You don't have to guess, and neither does your electrician. The Canadian Electrical Code prescribes a demand load calculation that adds up your home's loads using standardized factors and compares the total against your service capacity. It's a paper exercise your electrician performs before quoting the installation — typically as part of the same site visit. If the calculation shows room, you get a permit and a straightforward install. If it doesn't, you have options short of a full service upgrade.
If capacity is tight: three options, in order
First, an EV energy management system (EVEMS) — a load-management device the code explicitly recognizes. It monitors your home's total draw and pauses or throttles charging during the rare moments the rest of the house needs the capacity. In practice your car still charges overnight, when household demand is at its lowest. British Columbia's Go Electric program even adds a $200 rebate for one, on top of its charger rebate.
